Seminar med Sara Alcántar: Motherhood, is it for me?

Although society nowadays recognizes the importance of both parents being involved in the upbringing and caretaking of a child, the reality is that in most countries it’s still the mother who’s expected to fulfil these tasks to a greater degree. This, along with the promise that motherhood will give any woman the highest form of self-realization, as well as an idealized version of what it’s like to have children, has resulted in a significant number of mothers worldwide dealing with extremely stressful circumstances for which they feel completely unprepared for.
Some years ago, the topic of mothers who regret having children came to light. And since then, more and more parents around the world confess that they are part of those who secretly wish they didn’t have children. This shows how important it is to have open and honest discussions about the pros and cons of having children without idealizing the situation, in order to make a better informed decision. This way, we would promote a more fulfilling life for women (regardless if they decide to have children or not), as well as a better upbringing and quality of life for the children of those who choose to have them.
However, there is little room in our everyday lives and social spaces to openly talk about whether we want to become mothers or not without feeling judged or pressured by our friends, family, partner, or society in general. This leaves us isolated, forcing a lot of us to make this important decision based on social expectations, rather than by exploring our own individual capabilities, desires, and aspirations.
This is what this space is meant for. Since there is already a lot of information about the positive impacts and experiences that motherhood can bring to a woman’s life, in this seminar we will be majorly focusing on the uncomfortable and difficult aspects that are not talked about enough, but that can be (and usually are) a part of the motherhood experience. You will also be provided with practical exercises to help you consider this important decision.
If you’re having a hard time deciding whether you want to become a mother or not, if you've already made up your mind but would like to have some extra information, or if you’re just curious about the topic, this seminar is for you. The entrance is free, but you have to get a ticket through Hoopla.

This seminar will be held in English.
